Amigo Mobility Scooters
Founded in 1968, Amigo is a cornerstone of the mobility scooter industry. The company was founded by Al Thieme, who initially worked in the plumbing and heating industry in Bridgeport, MI. During this time, a relative of Mr. Thieme was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, losing much of their mobility. At that point, mobility aids were limited, and Mr. Thieme was determined to find a way to help his family member regain their independence.
In the evenings after work, Mr. Thieme began developing a mobility device in his garage that would allow people to regain their freedom. The result was the first Amigo — an electric, power-operated vehicle designed to assist those with limited mobility. It proved to be such a breakthrough that it helped establish a whole new industry.
Amigo Mobility International’s mission is simple but powerful: Improving Lives Through Mobility®. Over the years, the company has expanded into three main product lines: Healthcare, Material Handling, and Grocery & Retail.
As a family-owned business, Amigo is deeply committed to its customers. After more than 50 years, the company remains under the leadership of Al Thieme, alongside his wife, Beth Thieme (CEO); daughter, Jennifer Thieme Kehres (Director of Business Development); and son, Jordan Thieme (Director of Operations). Together, they oversee the company's functions and daily operations, continuing a legacy of dedication to improving the lives of those with mobility challenges.
